RYAN BUSH PHOTOGRAPHY

Preludes & Fugues  (2018 - ongoing)

These two new series, which are still in progress, are currently named "Preludes" and "Fugues" after the solo piano pieces of the same name by Dmitri Shostakovich. Just as those piano compositions progress through the cycle of major and minor keys before returning to the original key, these photographs are also arranged in cycles, where each  relates to the previous and next ones.

About the series

These two new series, which are still in progress, are currently named Preludes and Fugues after the solo piano pieces of the same name by Dmitri Shostakovich. Just as those piano compositions progress through the cycle of major and minor keys before returning to the original key, these photographs are also arranged in cycles, where each  relates to the previous and next ones. Both series can be shown with the photographs in grids, or in a linear or circular series.

In some respects, the Preludes photographs are like my Compositions series reborn, as both involve graphic compositions of black silhouettes against a white background. However, instead of the overhead wires featured in Compositions, these Prelude photographs feature individual fronds of a sago palm, which may evoke feathers, piano music, or other associations.

Meanwhile, the Fugue photographs also use a simple visual language, of trees and mountains silhouetted against the sky. Each photograph has some combination of light and dark, which may evoke oppositions such as yin and yang, matter and energy, conscious and unconscious, us and them, which are all so relevant in our world today. Together the photographs show a journey,  similar to the struggle in our world today to find a more peaceful way of working through our differences with less conflict, or climbing the mountain of our whole self to connect with the entirety of our being.

All photographs are archival pigment prints on Hahnemuehle PhotoRag paper, and are available at 20" x 20", 40" x 40", and 58" x 58".
